Breaking News- From one of our Members on the Steering Committee, Franz Schwarm

Jim,

On Thurs.   I attended the Seattle Golf Steering Committee Meeting at Jefferson Park.  Of course the first topic of discussion was the Golf Master Plan.  The good news is that it has been passed by the Board and the Council and should be discussed and acted upon at the upcoming August 12 meeting of the City Department of Finance meeting.  If all goes well there, something should begin to happen at the beginning of the 2010 fiscal year, but not before.

Andy Soden chaired the mtg. as usual but quickly turned it over to his supervisor, Sue Goodwin.  She tried hard to put a good face on the fact that Andy was moving on to a new position as Volunteer Coordinator at Magnasun Park as of Nov. 1 and would be doing a 3 month transition w/ the new Golf Director, Senior Recreation Specialist Paul Wilkerson who was also present and introduced.  He will be dual hatted and also directing the Parks Dept's. Swimming Pools.  He is not a golfer.  However, he may be a good fit as the implementation of the Master Plan unfolds.  He comes from 26+ years of Parks Department experience, mostly in maintenance and project management and is fully comfortable in the contracting arena.  He seems enthusiastic, willing to learn, and anxious to do well!  The proof will of course be in the pudding.

Those present for the meeting besides me were Jay Turner and Bob Woodward from Jefferson, Larry Geisler the Jefferson Course Superintendent, Paul Lavin Gen Mgr. and Head Pro also from Jefferson.  Several of us voiced our concerns about "switching Paddles in the middle of the creek" so to speak and lauded Andy's leadership over the past many years.  I'll be happy to discuss further with anyone interested.  (cell 465-9111).  Please pass this info to the Board (for sure) and the membership if you think appropriate.
